How To Make
A WorkCover Claim In Queensland
Lodging a work injury claim is simpler when you know the order things happen in. The claim itself goes to WorkCover Queensland, or to your employer’s insurer if they are self-insured, but it cannot be decided without a medical certificate from a doctor. That is where we come in.
The steps here follow the process set out by WorkCover Queensland, with notes on what our GPs do at each stage.
Know Your Time Limit
Five Steps To Lodge A Work Injury Claim
Follow these steps after being injured at work in Queensland. Your GP helps with step two and supports you through every step after it.
What to bring to your first appointment:
Steps to make your WorkCover claim:
Your Work Capacity
Certificate Explained
The work capacity certificate, sometimes called a certificate of capacity, is the medical certificate at the centre of every Queensland workers’ compensation claim. WorkCover Queensland cannot make a decision without one, so our GPs complete it at your first appointment for the injury.
It is not the same as a standard sick certificate. It records how the injury happened, the treatment you need and exactly what you can and cannot do at work, so your employer and insurer can plan around your recovery.
Your certificate is reviewed as you heal. At each follow-up your GP updates your capacity, which may move from no capacity for work, to suitable duties with restrictions, and then back to full capacity. Bring your claim number to every visit so the updated certificate reaches the right case manager.
What Your
Certificate Records
- Your diagnosis and how the injury happened
- The treatment and referrals you need
- Whether you have no capacity, some capacity or full capacity for work
- Clear restrictions such as lifting limits, reduced hours or no ladder work
- How long the certificate applies and when your next review is due
Support For Injured Workers
And Gold Coast Employers
A good recovery depends on the worker, the employer, the insurer and the doctor all pulling in the same direction. Use the switch below to see how we help each side.
For Injured Workers
For Employers
From your first appointment, your GP becomes the treating doctor for your claim. That means we:
- assess and treat your injury and track your progress at regular reviews
- complete and update your work capacity certificates
- refer you for X-rays, ultrasound, physiotherapy, psychology or a specialist when your recovery needs it
- discuss treatment requests with your insurer's case manager
- plan a return to work that suits both your injury and your job
If you also need your regular GP care or a check on an ongoing condition, let us know. Keeping your work injury and your everyday health with one clinic makes the full picture easier to manage.
Local businesses around Biggera Waters, Labrador and Runaway Bay send staff to us after incidents at work. Here is how we can work together:
- We see injured staff promptly and document the injury clearly on the work capacity certificate.
- With your worker's consent, we can talk through suitable duties with your rehabilitation and return to work coordinator.
- Specific restrictions on each certificate make it easier to offer safe, useful duties.
- We also provide pre-employment medicals for new starters.
Employers must report a work injury to their insurer within 8 business days of becoming aware of it. Employer forms and guides are available from WorkCover Queensland.
What A WorkCover
Appointment Costs
Queensland WorkCover does not pay for medical services until a claim has been accepted, so billing changes as your claim moves along. Here is what to expect at each stage. Ask our reception team about current consultation fees when you book.

Before Your Claim Is Decided
STAGE 2

STAGE 3
If Your Claim Is Not Accepted
Getting Back To Work Safely And At The Right Pace
Staying connected to work, even on reduced hours or lighter tasks, is widely recognised as good for recovery. Your GP sets restrictions that protect the injury while you rebuild strength and confidence, then eases them at each review as you improve.
If your recovery stalls, we look at why. That might mean further tests, a change in treatment or a referral to a physiotherapist, exercise physiologist, psychologist or specialist. Workplace injury rehabilitation works best when you, your employer, your insurer and your doctor are all working from the same plan, and we help keep everyone on it.
If a work injury is affecting your mood or sleep, we can also talk about mental health support from your GP.
Examples Of
Suitable Duties
Suitable duties, often called light duties after an injury, are agreed between you, your employer and your GP. They might include:
- Shorter shifts or a gradual increase in hours
- Seated or desk-based tasks instead of lifting
- Limits on weight, overhead reaching or repetitive movement
- Regular breaks to stretch, rest or attend physiotherapy
- Training, admin or supervisory work while you recover
WorkCover Questions
Our Patients Ask
Answers to the questions we hear most from injured workers at our Biggera Waters clinic. For general questions about appointments and billing, visit our FAQs page.
Do I need a referral to see a WorkCover doctor?
No. You can book directly with one of our GPs. Tell reception the appointment is for a work injury so we allow time for the assessment and your work capacity certificate.
Can I choose my own doctor for a WorkCover claim in Queensland?
Yes. In Queensland you can choose the doctor who treats your work injury. Seeing the same GP for each review makes it easier to track your progress and keep your certificates consistent.
How long do I have to lodge a WorkCover claim in Queensland?
WorkCover Queensland asks for claims within 6 months of your injury being diagnosed, or within 20 business days of a doctor first assessing you as unable to work fully. Late claims need a reason and may not be accepted.
How often does my work capacity certificate need updating?
Each certificate covers a set period. Your GP will book your next review before it runs out, update your capacity and restrictions, and issue a new certificate so there is no gap in your claim.
Am I covered if I was injured on the way to or from work?
Queensland workers' compensation can cover some injuries that happen while travelling to or from work. WorkCover Queensland or your employer's insurer decides each case, so see a GP, get the injury documented and lodge your claim.
Can I make a WorkCover claim for stress or a psychological injury?
Yes, mental injuries can be claimed in Queensland. Your GP can assess your symptoms, complete your certificate and arrange psychology support. The insurer looks closely at how work contributed to the injury when deciding the claim.
What happens if my employer is self-insured?
Some larger employers manage their own workers' compensation. The process is similar, but your claim goes to their self-insurer instead of WorkCover Queensland. Your GP completes the same work capacity certificate.
Will WorkCover pay for physiotherapy or scans?
Once your claim is accepted, reasonable medical and rehabilitation costs such as physiotherapy and imaging may be covered, often with prior approval from your case manager. We send referrals and reports to support these requests.
Can I see a GP about a work injury on the weekend?
Yes. Harbour Town Doctors is open 7 days, Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm and Saturday and Sunday 9:00am to 1:00pm. For care when we are closed, see our after-hours GP options.
