Health Checks For Men At Every Age
Australian men live about four years less than women, and a large part of the gap comes down to problems that were found late. Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and prostate changes rarely cause symptoms early on, which is exactly why a check matters when you feel fine.
The GPs at Harbour Town Doctors look after men of every age, from your first health check in your twenties through to health assessments after 75. That includes heart and diabetes risk, prostate and testicular concerns, tiredness and low mood, sleep, weight, sexual health and hormone questions such as low testosterone.
We are an accredited bulk billing practice at Harbour Town Premium Outlets, open 7 days with free parking. No referral is needed, so you can book a men’s health appointment or call 07 5222 7117 and ask for a longer consultation if you want a full check.

Men's Health Checks By Decade
A rough guide to what is worth checking and when. Your GP will adjust it to your own history, your family history and how you live.
| Your Age | What To Get Checked |
|---|---|
| 20s and 30s | Blood pressure, testicular self-checks, sexual health and STI testing, mental health, skin checks and a baseline blood test if you have a family history. |
| 40s | Heart and diabetes risk assessment, cholesterol and blood sugar, weight and waist, alcohol review, and prostate discussion if it runs in the family. |
| 45 to 49 | A bulk billed Medicare health check that looks specifically at your risk of chronic disease. Worth booking the year you turn 45. |
| 50s | Prostate conversation and PSA testing if you choose, bowel screening kit every 2 years from 45, heart checks, and eye and hearing changes. |
| 60s | Ongoing heart, diabetes and prostate monitoring, bone health, vaccinations including shingles, and a review of all your medicines. |
| 75 and over | A yearly Medicare health assessment covering mobility, memory, falls risk, continence and how you are managing at home. |

Always Tired? It Is Worth Investigating
Constant fatigue, low mood, trouble concentrating, loss of muscle or reduced interest in sex are often put down to getting older or working too hard. Sometimes that is the answer. Often it is not.
These symptoms overlap with several conditions that are simple to test for, and low testosterone is only one of them. Our GPs start with a proper history and blood tests rather than assuming a cause, and our onsite pathology means the samples can usually be taken during the same visit.
If your results do point to a hormone problem, your doctor will explain what the results mean, what the options are, and whether you should see an endocrinologist. Treatment decisions are made after diagnosis, never before.

Men's Health FAQs
The questions our Biggera Waters GPs hear from men most often.
When should I start having men's health checks?
Blood pressure is worth checking from your twenties, and a full risk assessment for heart disease and diabetes from around 40, or earlier if it runs in your family. If it has been years since you saw a GP, any age is a good time to start.
Do I need a referral to see a GP about prostate or testosterone concerns?
No. You never need a referral to see a GP. Walk in during opening hours or book online, and ask for a longer appointment if you want a full check. A referral is only needed if your GP arranges a specialist, and they will organise that.
Should I have a PSA test for prostate cancer?
It is a decision to make with your doctor rather than a routine test for everyone. Australian guidelines suggest discussing PSA testing every 2 years from age 50 to 69, or from 40 to 45 if you have a family history. Your GP will explain the benefits and the limitations so you can decide.
Can a GP help with erection problems?
Yes, and it is worth raising. Erection difficulties are common and are often linked to blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, medicines, alcohol or stress, so they can be an early warning sign of heart problems. Your GP will check the underlying causes rather than treating it in isolation.
How do I get my testosterone checked?
Start with a GP appointment. Testosterone is measured with a blood test, usually taken in the morning and often repeated to confirm the result, alongside other tests that can explain the same symptoms. Your GP will interpret the results in the context of how you actually feel.
Are men's health checks bulk billed?
We are an accredited bulk billing practice, so consultations are bulk billed for eligible Medicare card holders. Some assessments such as employment or commercial driver medicals attract a fee. Ask reception when you book.
Can I see the same GP each time?
Yes, and we would encourage it. Seeing the same doctor means your history, results and preferences are already known. You can request a particular GP when you book. Meet the team on our doctors page.
What if I am worried about my mental health?
Please raise it. Your GP can talk it through and prepare a mental health care plan for Medicare-subsidised psychology sessions. If you need help right now, call 000, Lifeline on 13 11 14 or MensLine on 1300 78 99 78.
